RAID, or Redundant Array of Independent Disks, is a technology for storing data on a number hard disk drives that work together as one logical unit. The drives can be physical or logical i.e. in the second case one single drive is split into individual ones via virtualization software. Either way, exactly the same data is kept on all of the drives and the key advantage of using this kind of a setup is that if a drive stops working, the data will still be available on the remaining ones. Using a RAID also improves the performance because the input and output operations will be spread among a few drives. There are several types of RAID based on how many drives are used, whether writing is done on all the drives in real time or just on one, and how the info is synced between the drives - whether it is written in blocks on one drive after another or all of it is mirrored from one on the others. These factors indicate that the error tolerance as well as the performance between the different RAID types can differ.

RAID in Shared Web Hosting

They function in RAID-Z - a special setup created for the ZFS file system that we work with. This is a specific drive where an extra bit is included to any content copied on it. In the event that a disk in the RAID fails, it will be changed without any service interruptions and the info will be rebuilt on the new drive by recalculating its bits using the data on the parity disk along with that on the other disks. This is done in order to ensure the integrity of the data and together with the real-time checksum authentication that the ZFS file system performs on all drives, you will never have to be concerned about losing any data no matter what.

RAID in Semi-dedicated Servers

The information uploaded to any semi-dedicated server account is saved on SSD drives that operate in RAID-Z. One of the drives in type of a setup is used for parity - every time data is cloned on it, an extra bit is added. If a disk turns out to be problematic, it will be removed from the RAID without interrupting the work of the Internet sites as the data will load from the remaining drives, and when a brand new drive is included, the information that will be cloned on it will be a mix between the information on the parity disk and data saved on the other hard drives in the RAID. This is done to ensure that the info that is being duplicated is accurate, so the moment the new drive is rebuilt, it could be included in the RAID as a production one. This is one more warranty for the integrity of your information as the ZFS file system which runs on our cloud hosting platform compares a unique checksum of all copies of your files on the various drives so as to avoid any possibility of silent data corruption.

RAID in VPS Servers

If you take advantage of one of our VPS server plans, any content you upload will be kept on SSD drives that function in RAID. At least 1 drive is employed for parity so as to guarantee the integrity of the info. In simple terms, this is a special drive where information is copied with one bit added to it. In case a disk in the RAID breaks down, your Internet sites will continue working and when a new disk takes the place of the faulty one, the bits of the data that will be copied on it are calculated by using the healthy and the parity drives. By doing this, any probability of corrupting data during the process is avoided. We also use ordinary hard disks that operate in RAID for storing backups, so in case you include this service to your VPS package, your site content will be stored on multiple drives and you'll never need to worry about its integrity even in the event of multiple drive failures.
